Sand Excavation An Open Secret

Sand excavation is a practice that is used to extract sand mainly through an open peat
,beaches, inland dunes and dredged from ocean beds and river beds.
The rapid urbanisation and development have encouraged increasing demand
of sand for construction by real estate and builder
It is a quick money making industry where tons of sands are illegally mined by
sand mining mafia all across India.In discriminate , unchecked, unregulated plundering of
natural resources goes on unawited unchecked.There is no specific regulations to put
into unckhed mining along rivers banks and coastal areas .The officials have turned a
blind eye .The cop -sand mining nexus is a reality. They fearlessly go about their
business disprisimgly as mafia are controlled by politician . Government does not show
any interest in curbing the activities even though mafia have attacked and killed numbers
of officials.Infact the politicians and administrative officers have share in this illegal
business and so they are protected by police and administration itself to some degree.If
they don't enjoy this protection they wouldn't operate in full open view of everyone.
But the loose of these large scale industry has been brought under
scanner when controversy errupted over the suspension of honest civil servant named
Durga Sakti Nagpal ,who darely fought against them .Founding is shocking as sand
mining mafia operated with certain normality without any restrictions from Government
and without any clearance from the environmental department of Government of
india.National green tribunal has already banned sand mining,but rules makes no
difference in karnataka. In UP there in none to prevent the loot where as in Rajsthan
despite ban , mining continued to be operated.Administration have turned blind eye and
don't pay any heed.Laws are made to protect the river from ruin ,but there are always
ways to overcome these laws as mafia have backing of politicians who are so utterly and
absolutely bent on making money. Tragedy is that there is conspiracy down the line in a
packing order in which power plays , preferential access and further vote bank politics
leads to death and destruction.So I got to a point where I think our country is in hands of
people who are true enemy of the union.
When government fails and it's official and politicians
become so cheap , people agitation rock the road.Number of protest against this are
going on but they have to quarrel with the police only as the official warn them to book
under sections and put behind the bars.villagers are getting ruined .Rules are flouted and
officers are oblivious.People are threatened for simply raising their voice.In Gujrat illegal
sand mining is an accepted activity ,no action are taken against them .It is not a simple
issue of corruption or poor fishermen turned wager but it is a life and death issue as
nature getting disturbed takes millions of life in return. It has much widespread
impact.The moment we take river's natural flow, river's natural defence, river's natural
ability to take the rain harvested in it , what we are going to do is to cause simply death
and destruction of masses. Impact of climatic change example more rain ,too lillte rain
,too early rain ,too late rain .The wounding of river are taking the coast .All river are
ravaged by mining in india.Marine life are in danger.It has caused erosion of river banks
and damaged vast biodiversity.They are under serious threat . It has a
socioenvironmental effects. It (sand excavation) is an established environmental
destructive activity so the consequences are serious.Due to indiscriminately mining in
coastal areas the depth of beaches has decreased and destruction of natural barriers
causes frequent flooding.Most of the people have become seasonal refugee.Ecological
and human rights are being violated by this generation but the next and coming
generation are going to face it .So there is a need to draw a line somewhere and decide
how much we need and how much we need to stop . But in industry ,where much money
and power are involved ,there is no control but only plundering of natural resources and
government revenue.Government is doing next to nothing to prevent this illegal practice.
There are no such effective policies to look the actuallity on ground neither any
awareness programme. Infact tragedy is to have so much resistance in creating
awareness because of strong lobby which wants sand mining to continue.
Government should take sweeping action of plantation and
awareness.Role of politicians be limited and be replaced by technology , which is th best
cure in the modern era . Online portals should be made especially for sand excavation
Detector machine should be used to check illegal mining. A special check system be
initiated and regulated where power would be distributed in multiple body.
United Nation now considers sand mining dangerous for the
environmental which threaten ecology all over the world.Internatioal trade of sand
mining are used to expand the physical boundaries.So UN now has directed an
advisory after many huge protest against sand mining where people and
environmentalist buried themselves in Jehu beach following the same principle of chipko
movement. An international movie named "sand war" got many laurels from all over
world.
Alternative of sand mining is stroke quarrying in which stones are crushed and
used instead of sand . There is need to recycle debris as now roads are being made
from recycled plastic.So please use this type of material for development.Engineers
need to come up with a project and solutions for community problems.We the people
look only at the development .It is good but we need to look at the cost of development
.We have to understand both the espects of development and then take conscious
decision as to what kind of development we are looking at.
